 Start
of the Semester Update
Jan 26, 2006 2006 has started with a bang for
LWAC! Our new staffer, Brie Phillips, began in early
January and has been an amazing addition to the collective.
She joined us from the Student-Farmworker Alliance where
she worked as national co-coordinator. If you want to
say hi, drop her a line at Brie (at) livingwageaction.org.
This
past weekend LWAC hosted a “Train the Trainers”
Retreat at our office in Washington, DC. We brought
in fabulous activists from across the country to be
trained in our workshops and become a part of the LWAC
collective. It was incredible! (Cornbread recipe will
be up shortly, I promise!) We intend to get these folks
on trips immediately.
In fact our first trip of the semester is this weekend
to Arizona State University. Students there are working
on a living wage campaign and are organizing around
a Sodexho contract renegotiation happening in the next
year. Look for an update from that trip next week.
Lastly,
LWAC met up with national leaders of various student
economic justice groups and other student organizations
such as the Student Labor Action Project, United Students
Against Sweatshops, Not With Our Money, the Student-Farmworker
Alliance, MEChA and the United States Student Association
to start talking about and preparing for the National
Student-Labor Week of Action happening in only 8 weeks
from March 27 to April 4. It was a great 2 days and
we are definitely getting really excited about the semester
to come!
