Bucknell campaign update
Nov 14, 2005 - posted by Amy Wollish, awollish(at)bucknell.edu
We,
the Catalyst Collective, are fighting for workers rights
in Central Pennsylvania at Bucknell University. Last
spring we held a protest to support the 64 Bucknell
dining services employees who were in danger of losing
wages and benefits with the new dining services company
(see photo). We attained about 2000 signatures in support
of these workers. We presented these signatures to the
president, and were able to guarantee attrition for
at least those workers who had 15 years of service.
This year, the dining services provider has been changed
from Sodexho to Parkhurst. To develop communication
with the workers, we had a worker appreciation day this
fall, where we handed out 200 carnations, and provided
food and buttons for workers. We are publishing the
next edition of the Catalyst shortly, so right now we
are compiling articles. Our goal is to have the edition
ready right after Thanksgiving Break. We are also holding
an open forum with the public safety officers to discuss
their position on campus. Other than that, we are really
excited to be hosting the Georgetown living wage members
at our campus during the Spring semester!
